President of SMSC Mark Bresnehan, has announced the senior football club coaches for the 2021 season. Ben Dalton senior playing coach, and Carl Robertson co-coach will head the much awaited 2021 season and beyond!

South Mildura will embrace technology as it builds a culture of professionalism under new playing coach Ben Dalton.

GPS tracking devices and player apps will be used as coaching tools to help the talented young bulldogs list understand the standards required to match it with the top tier in the Sunraysia Football Netball League next season.

Dalton was named as joint coach of South Mildura alongside Carl Robertson last week replacing John Pratt.

The former NEAFL and South Warnambool midfielder will be playing coach, while Robertson will be bench coach , a role he held during Wentworth’s great era under Mark Alvey.

“One of the things I can bring to the club is a bit more technology and professionalism in the different ways we go about things” said Dalton, who also runs the F45 gym with his partner in Mildura. “Things like GPS tracking and different technology with player apps, they are all things that the club has been very positive about. They can be really good tools, particularly with the younger players comparing them to older players and showing where they need to be reaching”

South Mildura finished with the wooden spoon in 2019, but was confident of an improved 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Dalton, who signed to play this year, said the signs in pre-season were positive and he was confident they could build on that in 2021.

“The positive is it will be that extra year for the younger bodies to mature. And the older players having 12 months off might help them get an extra one or two years, because they are feeling fresh,” he said.

Dalton said his decision to step up into the senior coaching job was driven by his involvement in the club since signing as a player. “It’s not just from a playing group, to the direction of the committee, even the social side of things, everyone is on the same page,” he said. “We have a pretty clear direction in how we want to move forward.”

South Mildura president Mark Bresnehan said the club was relieved to have two “quality people” put pen to paper. “We’ve been stressed over it since Pratty left, we weren’t prepared for that, but we have rallied as a club and we are just rapt to have these guys on board,” he said. “Blokes like Denny Fox and Alan Cameron have done a hell of a lot of work in the background, talking to the players, and we have kept our really talented young list together. “We are looking at adding a sprinkling of senior players and that will help our young list grow with maturity”.

Robertson said Fox had been instrumental in getting him back involved in the local footy after a break. “I love it, it’s in my blood,” he said.

The Bulldogs are set to begin a preseason program on October 5.

Dalton said he was confident that the club could manage whatever COVID-19 restrictions were thrown its way in the coming months. “I guess one of the things I bring as a strength and conditioning coach is that I will be able to set out programs for the group and individually for the block heading into Christmas”, he said. “I know the boys are keen to get in to it”.
