Wash up from Round 6 of the SFNL

Netball – With illness running through the camp, our netballers were playing in grades and positions they may not have been accustomed to, with mixed results for the day. Mildura are always strong and this showed again on Saturday. We had good wins by B Grade, C Res, 15 d2 and 13 d2, with C Res now sitting top of the ladder undefeated. All our teams are in the top 4, so this is a great achievement so far. Keep up the hard work girls you are all doing an amazing job.

Football – Well what a day out, with the SMSC nearly having a clean sweep in football. The senior team with a late flourish of goals nearly pinched a game that was not ours all day. The boys when they play well look great but need to do this for four quarters. We had great wins in all other grades with the Under 14s group coming from behind to win against a strong opposition. They played great team football, which makes for great viewing

Our under 16s undermanned but undeterred showed amazing heart resulting in a great win, and our Under 18s who were also undermanned with six players up in senior grade, fought hard all day and eventually came home with the four points.

A big shout out to all the coaches, team managers, and volunteers for navigating teams through illness and unavailability, you are all doing a fantastic job.

Also a huge shout out to our timekeepers in football who had to sit in the grandstand at No 1 in cold weather, the club cannot thank you enough.

First hit out of the year

The seniors, reserves, and under 18’s footballers had their first practice match hit out for 2022 on Monday night against the Mildura Demons at Aero Ovals.

In a hit out that featured new big man recruit Matthew Lutze and the return of Domenic Scullino from a long injury layoff, a young Bulldogs squad without the likes of Tyler Curtis, Kevin McDonald, and coach Ben Dalton, showed glimpse of what they are capable of this season.

In warm conditions, the boys were slow out of the blocks with Mildura kicking the first couple of goals, however our strong midfielders including Jackson Mcewen, Nathan Nolan, and Declan Loveridge started to show why they are A Graders of the competitions, by taking control of the midfield battle.

After an even first half, plenty of changes were made for the remainder of the game from both sides with there being plenty of positive passages of play. There were glimpses of the positive game plan being implemented by coach Ben Dalton, which was evident to the supporters in attendance.

There is now only a short turnaround to the next practice match this Saturday against Balranald.

Building the future of community sport in Mildura

When it comes to community sport success stories, you’d be hard-pressed to find a club with a more interesting history than South Mildura Bulldogs Sporting Club (SMSC Bulldogs).

With a lineage that stretches back to 1945, the early members of the club relied on the ladies committee to get the through the initial hard times.

“The ladies committee were stealing footballs from a rival football club,” Club President Kevin Burke said.

“We had players that would go and train with an opposing football club, kick the footy over the shed, and the ladies would be waiting out in the street to collect footys so we had something to train with.”

“Not ideal,” he laughs, “but you did what you could to get by”.

Those humble beginnings are well behind the club now, as they as they close-out a 76-year tenure at Sarah Oval in central Mildura and prepare to move into the Mildura Sporting Precinct.

With stage one works recently completed and the much-anticipated stage two works on the horizon, Burke sees a bright future ahead for grassroots sport in Mildura.

“What the facility means for the club and sport in general in the community is fantastic.”

Until recently the club has been in the unenviable position of having to split junior football games across two locations, stretching resources and volunteers. Burke anticipates that having a centralised location will not only make life easier for current members but will also help the SMSC Bulldogs attract new talent.

Increasing participation in sport is a key priority for the Victorian Government, which has contributed $13.75 million towards stages one and two of the Mildura Sporting Precinct.

With works including indoor and outdoor facilities for a range of sports, the stage is set for the precinct to become the premier sporting hub for the Mallee, capable of hosting a range of regional sports as well as major sports competition including AFL and NBL preseason fixtures.

Importantly, the new multi-sport precinct ensures that local clubs like SMSC Bulldogs can expand their teams and take on more players. This means more opportunities for athletes and easier access to games for multi-sport families who will no longer be split between venues.

“All in all, the precinct is a huge benefit to grassroots sport in general.” Burke said.

“We can’t wait, it’s exciting times.”

Stage Two works at the Mildura Sporting Precinct are due for completion in 2023.
