IT was an emotional day at Quandong Park on Saturday where both sides played for a shield dedicated to the memory of Cohen Andrew, who recently died in a car crash.

Andrew’s loss impacted heavily on players and supporters from both sides – he played for Red Cliffs as well as South Mildura.

On the back of that tragedy though, came a clear best-on-ground performance from former teammate Kevin McDonald that warmed the hearts of all present.

Fired by the loss of his mate, 18-year old McDonald booted four inspirational goals in South Mildura’s 16.9 (105) to 11.11 (77) win over Red Cliffs.

McDonald is a natural finisher and his high marking and accurate kicking across half-forward was a highlight of the game.

“I played my role (but) we got the win for Cohen and the Andrew family,” McDonald said.

“Our attack on the ball was good today and is partly the result of a huge pre-season.

“It’s a big step to get the win – we’ll hit the track hard and I’m looking forward to Mildura next week.”

Little separated the sides all day and with the Dogs leading 73 to 61 at the final change, the game was still very much in the balance.

A 50-metre penalty – one of a few for the game – to Tiger Ned Duthie when scores were still tight halfway through the quarter, brought him to comfortable shooting range about 20m out, but his kick completely missed the target and went out on the full.

He’s presumably been watching too much AFL

From there, the Dogs swiftly got the upper hand, kicking the remaining three goals.

South Mildura have several very smart players including Chris Sellens, Dallas Holmes, Josh Holding, Aaron Rowe and Nathan Manuel, all giving coach John Pratt plenty to be confident about.

“The game could have easily have gone either way well into the last quarter,” Pratt said.

“It was a strong, gutsy win and I’m proud of the team – we played for Cohen.

“Kevin (McDonald) was brilliant – he takes a big mark, has excellent skills and is set for a big future.

“And Nathan (Manuel, five goals) really stood up for us today.”

Despite the loss, Tigers’ coach Brian Fenton remained fairly upbeat postmatch, preferring to focus on the game’s positive aspects.

“The coaching staff is proud of your effort – it’s been a big week,” Fenton said while addressing his players.

“Don’t worry about the score, it was a great contest – the execution of the game plan was good and we looked dangerous.

“It’s the little one or two errors that matter and we need to cap them over.

“The big positive is that we’re improving.”

Senior football score

The following is the round 8 summary from the weekly footy guide (R9)

Well as the saying goes……What a week it’s been in Football and Netball……The Bulldogs were Barking loudly across all grades of both disciplines with us only dropping 2 games of football for the weekend in the Tigers lair at Quandong Park.

Our netball sides junior and senior were all up and about taking out a great days netball with convincing and dominant performances. Exciting is an understatement with the talent we have coming through in our junior netball program, well done to all our coaches and volunteers teaching the craft to our juniors.

Our A-Grade ladies continued there great form after having the weeks rest and took the chocolates against a gallant Red Cliffs team. Loretta continues to challenge the ladies to find something else week in week out to better themselves, the team…..and wow, they find another gear every time, fantastic result as we look forward to this week.

Today we host the Demons at the kennel and look forward to the match ups through-out the course of the day, good luck to all our Bulldog Netball Teams.

Pratty and the Senior team were back on the winning side of the ledger and were on from the first bounce in a close game for much of the day holding just a 6 point lead at ¼ time and half time. By ¾ time the boys extended that lead out to 16 points with a 5 goal to 3 3rd quarter. The message at ¾ time was clear……..keep the foot on the gas and bring the win home, and after a 5 minute lapse of concentration early in the last that’s what they did kicking another 4 goals to 2 to win by a comfortable 28 points.

The focus is now onto today’s game against Mildura at home………our first home game since round 5 so the boys will be looking to give our home crowd more to cheer about this week. In a similar position as well with just 2 wins the Demons will be looking to knock us over given their performance and result against Ouyen last week………but beware any side that takes this young bulldog group for granted…..week by week things are gradually falling into place and there has been a change in mindsets on what is probable and what is certainly possible.

Good Luck to Pratty and the boys today…………lets rip em to shreds………

Saturday 22nd is our Bi-annual Bulldog Black Tie Ball at the workers, any members who don’t have tickets please touch base with any board member.
